High-quality Oriolus oriolus audio for birders, wildlife photographers and field researchers who need a reliable reference call.
Around 24 cm in length, the Golden Oriole (Oriolus oriolus) is a passerine songbird: the male brilliant golden-yellow with black wings, a jewel of riverside poplars. It hides in the canopy of tall poplars, riverside woods and orchards.
The male's glorious, fluty 'weela-weeo' whistle rings from the poplar canopy, the bird itself rarely seen. It feeds on large insects and, later in summer, on figs, cherries and other fruit. It stays high in dense leaf cover and is far easier to hear than to see. On migration it moves through Greece and the Mediterranean in great numbers, a familiar bird of field, wood and garden.
The Golden Oriole is a protected wild bird across virtually its entire European breeding range: it falls under the general protection regime of the EU Birds Directive, is listed under the Bern Convention, and holds Schedule 1 (highest protection) status in the UK. It is not managed as a game species anywhere in its range that we have been able to verify, so this recording is intended for birdwatching, species identification, photography, and research playback rather than hunting. Because rules on any use of bird sound recordings (including for luring or research) vary by country and can require permits, please consult our full country-by-country disclaimer before using this call in the field.
